The existing 700 I Street three story office building was built in 1960 and was once home to the Bank of America and to the Sacramento Police Department. A major renovation is needed for this vacant building to optimize the buildable area by adding an additional top level and to revitalize the existing basement by introducing a new bamboo garden with indirect daylight. With an objective of designing a net zero energy building, the design team organize an Eco-charette with all stakeholders to identify any potential green strategies for the renovation. Some of the sustainable ideas include radiant heating and cooling systems, a dedicated bicycle storage area in the lobby area, thermal mass for east and west facades, heat stacks with chimney effects through the roof, operable window systems for natural ventilation, application of light shelves, and systematic configuration of close and open offices, just to name a few. This project was executed with Stantec Consulting Inc.
